1.call

1) 사람이나 장소 혹은 번호로 전화할 때는 to를 쓰지 않고 바로 목적어를 쓴다.

2) '어떤 사람에게 어떤 번호로 전화하다'고 할 때는 at이나 on을 쓴다. 'call + 사람 + at(on) 번호'라는 형식으로    쓴다.

   Please call me with number 952-6591. (*)

   Please call me on number 952-65911. 


3) '-을 -으로 부르다'고 할 때는 as 없이 바로 목적어 두 개를 연이어 쓴다.


   Koreans call this room as 'anbang'.(*)

   Koreans call this room 'anbang'.

2.calm


1) calm은 최근에 시끄러웠거나 어떤 소동이 있고 난 후에 조용한 이라는 뜻을 갖고 일반적으로 '조용한'은 quiet나 peaceful을 쓴다.


   If you prefer a calm environment, try the countryside.(*)

   If you prefer a peaceful environment, try the countryside.

3.car


1) '차에 타다'는 get in(into), '내리다'는 get out of를 쓴다.


   I went into the car and turned on the engine.(*)

   I got into the car and turned on the engine.


   I went out of the car and waited outside the shop.(*)

   I got out of the car and waited outside the shop.


2) '차로 갔다'고 할 때는 by car, '누구의 차로 갔다'고 할 때는 in someone's car를 쓴다. 누구의 차라고 해서 with를 쓰지 않는다.


   He brought me back to Cambridge with his car.(*)

   He brought me back to Cambridge in his car.

4.care


1) care는 셀 수 없는 명사이므로 관사를 쓰지 않는다.


   These children need a special care and attention.(*)

   These children need special care and attention.


2) '돌보다(look after)'의 뜻으로 쓸 때는 take care of를 쓰고 '조심하다(be careful)'의 뜻으로 쓸 때는 take care + to부정사를 쓴다.


   Take care of not catching a cold.(*)

   Take care not to catching a cold.


3) careful은 특별한 주의를 기울임으로써 사고나 실수 혹은 손해 등을 피할 수 있을 때 쓴다. 반면에 누군가에게 할 것을 잊지 않도록 하거나 어떤 것을 살펴봐야하는 것을 잊지 않도록 할 때는 make sure을 쓴다.


   Be careful to water the African violets regularly.(*)

   Make sure (that) you water the African violets regularly.


   Be careful! You're about to spill your coffee.

   You should be careful about what you say to her.

5.cash


1) 수표나 카드로 지불할 때는 pay by check, pay credit card로 쓰지만 현금으로 지불한다고 할 때는 pay cash 혹은 pay in cash로 쓴다.


   I prefer to pay by cash.(*)

   I prefer to pay cash.


2) '현금이 얼마다'고 할 때는 '금액 + in cash'로 쓴다.

6.catch


1) catch가 '이해하다'라는 뜻으로 사용될 때는 누군가가 금방 말한 것과 연결시켜 '그것을 알아듣다, 못 알아듣다'라고 할 때 사용한다. 일반적으로는 understand를 쓴다.

7.cause


1) cause는 어떤 것(사건)을 일으킨 원인을 말하고 reason은 어떤 것에 대한 설명 즉 이유를 말한다. 관계사 why가 오면 선행사는 reason을 써야한다.


   The cause why I want to change my job is as follows.(*)

   The reason why I want to change my job is as follows.


   The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

   These outbreaks of violence will continue to occur until the causes  have been eliminated.


2) '-의 원인'이라고 할 때는 'cause of'로, '-의 이유'라고 할 때는 'reason for'로 쓴다.


   The police wanted to know the cause for the accident.(*)

3) 중요한 원인이라고 해서 important cause라고 하지 않고 major(chief, primary) cause라고 한다.


   Smoking is one of the most important causes of lung cancer.(*)

4) 몇 가지 이유에 의해 야기되었다고 해서 be caused by 다음에 reason을 쓰지 않는다.


   Acid rain is caused by several reasons.(*)

8.certain


1) 우리말에 어떤 사람이라고 해서 무조건 certain을 쓰면 안되고 some을 쓸 줄도 알아야 한다. 'certain + 명사'는 certain 뒤의 명사를 자세히 설명할 수 있거나 그냥 설명하고자 할 때 쓰며 'some + 명사'는 자세히 설명하기를 원치 않을 때 쓴다.


   Every creature must have a certain way of protecting itself.(*)

   Every creature must have some way of protecting itself.


   There are certain advantages to living in the countryside, the most  important being the fresh air.

   I'm not allowed to eat certain types of seafood, especially squid and  octopus.


2) certainly는 문두에 쓰지 않고 일반동사 앞, be 동사 뒤에 쓴다.

9.chance


1) '-의 변화(교체)'라고 할 때 of를 쓸 수도 있고 in을 쓸 수도 있다. of를 쓰게 되면 거의 완전히 변화하거나 교체된 것을 말하고 약간의 변화(교체)가 있을 때는 in을 쓴다.


   We can reduce the unemployment rate with a change of the  economy.(*)

   We can reduce the unemployment rate with a change in the economy.


2) 어떤 것을 딴 것으로 바꾸었다고 할 때는 with를 쓰면 안되고 for를 써야한다.


   I took the camera back to the shop and changed it with another  one.(*)

   I took the camera back to the shop and changed it for another one.

10.cheap


1) '비용, 봉급, 세금 등이 많다 혹은 적다'고 할 때는 low, high를 쓰고 '물건이 비싸다, 싸다'고 할 때는 expensive, cheap를 쓴다.


   The wages in Taiwan are very cheap.(*)

   The wages in Taiwan are very low.

11.circumstance


1) 주로 복수형으로 사용한다.


   I believe that in this circumstance students should be allowed to have  a part-time job.

   I believe that in these circumstances students should be allowed to  have a part-time job.

12.climate


1) climate는 한 국가나 지역 등 넓은 지역에 걸쳐 일어나는 비교적 변하지 않는 기후를 나타낸다. 반면에 weather은 시시각각 변하는 날씨를 말한다.


   While I was driving to the airport, the climate was still wet and foggy.(*)

   While I was driving to the airport, the weather was still wet and foggy. Don't go out and buy any special clothes.


2) 한 국가의 전통적 의상은 custom(셀 수 없는 명사)이고 배우 등이 공연할 때 입는 한 벌의 옷은 custom(셀 수 있는 명사)이다.


   The dancers were dressed in their national clothes.(*)

13.color


1) '무슨 색깔이다'고 할 때는 have를 쓰지 않고 be를 쓴다.


   The belt has the same color as the coat.(*)

2) green color shirt처럼 색깔 뒤에 color를 쓰지 않는다.


   I bought a blue color shirt and a pair of socks.(*)

3) 색깔 그 자체의 순순한 색깔이 아니라 형용사 등의 수식을 받아 색깔이 달라질 때는 a(an)을 쓴다.


   The purse is made of leather and is dark brown color.(*)

4) '-의 색깔'할 때는 'the color of + 사물'을 쓰며 '사물 + color'라고 쓰지 않는다.

14.compare


1) '비교하다'일 때는 with를 쓰고 '비유하다'일 때는 to를 쓴다. 같은 대상끼리는 비교를 하며 사람과 동물처럼 다른 대상끼리는 비유한다.


   The teachers will be able to visit our schools and compare our  teaching methods to their own.(*)

15.concern


1) '-에 관한 한'이라 할 때는 'as far as + 주어 + be concerned'라고 쓴다.

2) '걱정하다'고 할 때는 be concerned about처럼 수동태로 쓰며 about을 붙인다.

3) '관계 있다'고 할 때는 with를 써서 be concerned with를 쓴다. with다음에는 -ing를 쓸 수도 있다.

1) 좋은 상태라고 할 때는 in good(excellent, perfect, bad, terrible) condition처럼 a(an)을 쓰지 않는다.

2) 사람이 살거나 근무하는 상황을 이야기 할 때는 복수형 conditions를 쓴다.

17.confident


1) '-에 대한 자신감'할 때는 with를 안 쓰고 about을 쓴다.


   I feel quite confident with my English.(*)

2) 자신에 대해 자신감을 가질 때는 confident of oneself로 쓰지 않고 self-confident라고 쓴다.


   I began to feel more confident of myself.(*)

18.control


1) '-을 통제하다'할 때는 전치사(over, of) 없이 바로 대상을 쓰며 '-에 대한 통제'처럼 control을 명사로 쓸 때는 over이나 of를 붙여쓴다.


   I was surprised that nobody wanted to control my luggage.(*)

2) '사람이 통제를 잃다'고 할 때는 lose control of를 쓰고 '차량이나 기계가 주어가 되어 통제가 안 된다'고 할 때는 be (go) out of control을 쓴다.

1) '무슨 과정'이라고 할 때는 in(on)을 쓰지 of를 쓰지 않는다.

20.crime


1) 범죄를 저지르다라고 할 때는 commit a crime이라고 하지 do, make, perform a crime이라고 하지 않는다.

2) 중죄는 a heavy crime이 아니라 a serious crime이다.

21.cry


1) 울거나 웃거나 할 때 laugh or cry로 한다. 순서를 바꾸면 안 된다.

1) 상처(cuts, wounds, injuries)를 치료할 때는 heal을 쓰지 cure을 쓰지 않는다.

2) 의사나 간호사가 상처나 아픈 사람을 치료할 때는 treat를 쓴다.

1) '-에 대한 호기심에서'라고 할 때는 out of curiosity로 쓴다. from을 쓰지 않는다.
